TV Aerials Near Me In York
So, which aerial is best for my house? When considering the best outdoor tv aerial to install at your property, you need to think about more than just how much it will cost you. Factors such as the proximity of the nearest TV Aerial mast to the location of your house or the surrounding environment, for example, do you have high buildings or trees around you?
TV Aerials Near Me In York will always advise on the best quality tv aerial to suit your home and requirements. If you live far away from the mast, then the likelihood is that you will require an HG Aerial as the further away your home is the weaker the signal will be. An HG Aerial installation would also be recommended if you were considering connecting multiple rooms to the aerial. A smaller aerial would not have the strength to supply multiple points.
A good indication of how good the signal is around your home, is to have a look at your neighbour’s TV Aerials, check their quality and the position of them. In areas of good reception, a standard logger or 32 elements outdoor aerial will be fine, within a poor reception area TV Aerials Near M In York would recommend installing a 52 element aerial, High Gain Aerial. Our engineers will always recommend the best tv aerial to buy. For further advise or to book a visit please contact us and we are more than happy to help Learn More about different TV Aerials.
Indoor TV Aerial in York
Very rarely people find that they are unable to install an aerial onto the outside of their properties. In these instances, an indoor aerial is often an option. This then begs the question, what are the best indoor TV Aerials? TV Aerials York are on hand to advise and inform our customers about the best indoor aerials for Freeview. We would always advise that you need to be situated within 10 to 15 miles from the nearest mast in order to receive a good reception for the indoor aerial. By searching the Digital UK Postcode checker, you can identify which mast is nearest to your home or property.
Other defining factors that will affect the quality of the signal received on the indoor aerial would include: the location of the property, if it has buildings or trees surrounding it, or if you were situated within a valley. If you are unfortunate enough to suffer from any of these issues, then the quality of the reception would be significantly affected. Do indoor aerials work with Freeview? The simple answer is yes, a good quality indoor aerial will work if there are none of the factors above affecting the signal.
Today indoor aerials come in multiple shapes and designs, the quality of the aerials has also improved, and most modern ones now have a built-in amplifier to maximise the reception, this would work especially well if you had poorer reception. The indoor aerials need to be plugged straight into the back of your television or Freeview box. For optimum signal move the aerial around until you find the best position. If you have an omnidirectional aerial it will adjust and align itself accordingly. TV Aerials York are happy to discuss the options with you or we can arrange a visit and check the signal within your area before you decide.
Loft TV Aerial York
Can I fit a TV Aerial in the loft? Our engineers at TV Aerials York would visit your property and investigate to identify whether a digital loft aerial could be installed affectively. Many new build properties already have the cabling for the aerials run directly up into the roof or loft space and we are installing loft TV Aerials more frequently. Different areas of York will receive varying reception, some areas are better than others. In poor signal areas, a High Gain aerial would always be advised so that the best reception can be received.
We often get asked, do loft aerials work? The simple answer is yes, however TV Aerials York would always advise that installing a tv aerial onto the roof would always provide the best reception. If the roof space is lined with foil, then no aerial would work. Some older properties also have a thicker roof than some of the new builds of today and this would also affect the reception if the aerial was installed in the loft.
In order to receive the optimum signal strength within the loft TV Aerials York would suggest installing an HG aerial or an amplifier, especially if the loft aerial is going to be connected to multiple televisions. One positive factor is that installing the aerial into the loft will prevent the loft aerial being blown if there are strong winds, it will not rust or be knocked out of alignment by the different weather conditions.
York Freeview Aerials
Freeview TV is received through a TV Aerial. TV Aerials York most commonly install TV Aerials onto the roof, often, onto the chimney. The highest point obviously provides the strongest reception. A typical tv aerial installation includes supplying and installing the aerial, cabling, bracket and lashing kit if the aerial needs to be raised higher to gain optimum reception the engineers will install the Freeview aerial onto a 10 or 12-foot pole.
Within poor signal areas of York, our engineers often recommend installing a satellite dish as these are often used when the tv aerial reception is poor or unavailable. If a customer insists on wanting Freeview than a High Gain tv aerial may be an option. These aerials are more expensive; however, they will receive the best reception possible, especially if they are erected onto a high pole. TV Aerials York will always advise and inform our customers on the best options to suit their property.
Customers often ask, Which aerial is the best for Freeview? This is dependant on the location of your property and how far from the nearest transmitter you are. The distance will determine which aerial would be best suited to your property. If you are close to the mast a standard 32 element tv aerial will provide you with Freeview channels. If you are further away an HG aerial would be necessary. TV Aerials York will attend your home or premises and assess the site before giving you advice on what they think would be the best tv aerial to install.

TV Aerial Cable York
What type of cable do I need for TV aerial? TV Aerials York can attend and install coaxial cabling within your home or commercial premises. Installing the correct coax cabling is an integral part of the aerial installation and the quality of the coax cable connector is just as important. The most common coax cabling includes RG59/U, RG6/U and RG11/U. RG6 coax cable is the cable that is used most commonly within homes, it can transmit audio and video signal to televisions.
RG6 coax cabling is also used when distributing Satellite systems within homes and businesses, within British standards this coax cable is the minimum requirement for aerial cabling. The RG59/U cabling is best suited to basic analogue television feeds within the home, it is made from copper central conductors and ideally is used when terminating the ends with F-Type connectors. TV Aerials York also use this cabling with simple CCTV installations that only require a short length.
TV Aerials York tend to use RG11 for special purposes, such as burial or extremely long runs, also when installing large distribution setups, forming the backbone of a TV or Satellite system RG11/U coax is essential for a professional installation. Call TV Aerials York for any cabling related advice or to book an extension in with one of our engineers.

How much does it cost to get an aerial fitted? If you need a new aerial installation, the average cost of a new digital aerial is around £150 with additional sockets and cabling costing about £45. However, the cost of a new aerial also depends on the area that you live in and the proximity from the nearest mast. Magic Eye Installation York
We often get asked, what is a magic eye? A magic eye installation is an infrared transmitter, with a remote extender that lets you control the TV channels on your digital satellite box from another room within the house. The magic eye links between the coax cable and the aerial socket at the back of the television.
TV Aerials York are experienced in sky magic eye installations. After the magic eye installation, you will be able to watch free sat or sky in another room other than the one where the box is situated. You will still be able to watch HD digital channels.
Multiple eyes can be connected so you can install magic eyes into every room, to do this would require the installation of a global amplifier or a distribution amp that as IR bypass. The signal to the other rooms is sent through the cabling from the satellite. This is ideal for when you’re in the kitchen or in bed as you won’t require a second box.
The only negative is that the TV channels can only be changed via the main box, meaning the additional rooms can only watch what is showing on the main television. Obviously, this would not be ideal if you have a large family as everyone will want to watch different things. Please give us a call and TV Aerials York staff and engineers would be more than happy to assist.
TV Aerial Booster York
An aerial booster is an RF amplifier designed to amplify your aerial signal, the installation of an aerial booster for tv allows the signal received through the aerial to be increased. TV Aerials York will always test the signal strength of the aerial using a meter. If the signal is poor or registers below the recommended level, the engineer would always suggest an amplifier to ensure the best signal and prevent pixelation.
When a large television system is installed the masthead or distribution amplifiers are required to ensure that the best reception is received throughout the property. Be aware, this type of distribution amplifier will pick up interference from radios if they are not installed correctly.
That’s why on TV Aerials York we would always recommend a professional engineer to come out and provide advice. The Incorrect installation of a booster may cause problems with televisions, as well as mobile phones and radio comms systems.
An aerial with booster can easily be concealed discreetly within the loft or roof cavity. Masthead amplifiers are more commonly attached to the aerial pole with a cable coming from the box and another lead running to the television within the property. They are quite simple and don’t affect the aesthetics of the property. Please feel free to call for more information on aerial boosters.
Best TV Aerial Connectors York
Although there are a variety of aerial cable connectors available, television aerials use three types of aerial connectors to input on televisions. TV Aerials York understand that the quality of the aerial wire connectors determines the performance of the signal to your televisions. Good quality cabling and connectors are as important as the aerial itself.
F connector is the most commonly used aerial connector. The connector uses a single pin connection made from the central wire of the cabling. A threaded cylinder covers the connector and allows you to screw it onto the television port, therefore securing the connection.
Alternatively, TV Aerials York may also use a UHF connector which uses a sprung, tooth-like clamp that the cabling is inserted onto. Once the core is exposed the cable is inserted and the collar tightened. The coax is terminated, and performance is improved.
For CATV, SATV and Digital TV, F-Type coax connectors are used alongside RG6 and RG11 cabling, and although screw aerial connectors are also available TV Aerials York believes that the crimp connectors, terminated using crimping tools produce the better connection. Call today to discuss the options or book an appointment
Caravan TV Aerials York
If you’re looking for TV aerials for caravans, then TV aerials York can advise and install the best caravan aerials for you. Many caravans are like a second home, so there is no point having a large flat-screen TV if you can’t get any reception. Don’t let poor reception ruin your stay, TV Aerials York stock a variety of caravan tv aerials as well as caravan aerial pole.
The aerials and masts come in a variety of styles and sizes, whatever your requirements we can install the best caravan aerial or you. The caravan roof aerial is attached to a mast to provide additional height in order to receive optimum reception. The stronger the signal the better the picture that is received.
A High Gain aerial is known as a Diginova. It is a 10 element yagi-type UHF aerial that is watertight and UV resistant, ensuring it is protected from the elements. Once installed the aerial adapts itself to the received signal in the area, correcting any signal fluctuations and auto-adjusting the output to enable an optimum level for viewing. TV aerials York install these types or aerials to caravan parks as well as static caravans.
TV Aerial Splitters York
A TV aerial splitter would be required if you wanted to split an aerial feed to enable the aerial to feed two Freeview digital tv receivers within the property. We often get asked, does an aerial splitter weaken the signal? In simple terms, yes it will, however, if you encounter poor reception or signal loss once the feed has been split then TV Aerials York would recommend installing a distribution amplifier.
Can a TV aerial be split into multiple rooms? TV Aerials York connects aerials to multiple rooms regularly. Obviously connecting the extra rooms will requite splitters. For example, connecting the aerial to 5 additional rooms would require a 5-way aerial splitter. It is most likely that you will require an amplifier to boost the signal as well.
The engineers at TV Aerials York can also split sky leads and radio aerials. Ideally installing a High Gain Aerial would supply multiple rooms without the use of an amplifier. This is the most cost-effective way to supply multiple rooms. Call today and our engineers will call out and discuss the best way of connecting your rooms to the aerial. The engineers will use their meters to determine the strength and reception being received, from this information they will then suggest the best solution for your home.

Do you need a TV aerial to watch Freeview?
TV Aerial Installation services are asked every day Do you need a TV aerial to watch Freeview? What TV antenna do I need to get Freeview On Demand? You need a TV antenna to pick up your TV signal so you can access Freeview On Demand (here’s why).
You can either use a UHF aerial or a satellite dish. If you have UHF coverage (check here), we recommend using a roof-top UHF aerial for best results – you’ll get high definition pictures and Dolby Digital sound on selected programmes; but if it’s easier to use your satellite dish, you can do that too.
If you’re looking to buy a product with Freeview HD On Demand, make sure it’s compatible with the type of TV antenna you’re using: Or If you use a UHF aerial, you’ll need one of these products with Freeview On Demand for UHF. Also, you use a Satellite Dish, you’ll need one of these products with Freeview On Demand for Satellite.
Do you need an aerial for a TV with built-in Freeview?
All TVs since 2010 come with Freeview built in so once you have unpacked the TV and set it on its stand/wall mount the most important thing you need is an aerial in good condition to pick up the Freeview signal.
We recommend a roof aerial as this will cause less problems with interference. If you need a new aerial or to repair an existing aerial then get in touch with either the Confederation of Aerial Industries (CAI) or Get Me Digital who can give you details of one or more members who operate in your area and guarantee their work:
Find an approved CAI installer at Get Me Viewing, A local installer will understand the circumstances and local geography of your area and suggest the best option for you. In some cases a set-top aerial will work but this can involve more trial and error (check which way your neighbours’ aerials are pointing).
Can I Use an Indoor TV aerial For Freeview?
Your Freeview TV will come with instructions on how to set up, but see our general summary below. If you require further support, you should contact the manufacturer. Your Freeview TV should come with a power lead and remote control and batteries. Plug the TV in and fit the batteries to the remote. Plug in the aerial and turn the TV on.
Most TVs will start with a setup procedure for you to follow. If you have a smart TV then you will be asked for your Wi-Fi network and password so have these ready. Then you will be asked to tune your TV to find the available Freeview channels. This will take 3-4 minutes. At the end of this, you can save the channels and start watching. Remember that if you have a Freeview HD TV then HD channels start with BBC One at 101.
Almost certainly. 98.5% of the UK population can receive Freeview.
Find out if you’re in that 98.5% with our coverage checker.
The Freeview coverage checker gives a good indication of whether you’ll be able to receive Freeview. However, do bear in mind that it is a prediction based on area 100 square metres around your address. There might be some homes in that area which cannot receive Freeview, because of the exact location of the property and other elements of your local geography, such as tall buildings, trees or hills.
When you buy a Freeview HD TV or other equipment, we recommend that you make sure that you can get a refund from your retailer if these local factors prevent you from receiving Freeview. Call 0800 0132341 If you need a TV aerial to watch Freeview?
What is the difference between Freeview and Freesat?
What is the difference between Freeview and Freesat? Well here is a TV Aerial Services Answer. Freeview is digital TV received through an aerial from a land-based transmitter, through a set-top box or a Freeview TV set. Freesat is also received via a set-top box, however, transmissions are through a satellite, therefore a dish is required.
In areas where Freeview via an aerial is poor or unobtainable, Freesat can often be the perfect solution. It also has the advantage that currently over 180 TV and radio channels are available, against about 80 for Freeview. One final bonus is that both Freeview and Freesat are, as the names suggest, entirely free, once the equipment to receive them has been purchased, there are no ongoing charges or monthly subscriptions payable.
There isn’t really a comparison between Freeview and Freesat, with both of them, the set-top boxes are cheap and quite often many people have both systems plugged into the same TV set. Although, as stated Freesat does provide more channels. The days of five channel analogue TV are long gone and Freeview and Freesat now offer a huge range of digital TV channels and radio stations.
What is the difference between Freeview and Freesat?
As explained, both get access to a digital TV service without paying a monthly fee or signing up to a contract, one is delivered through an aerial and a set-top box, the other through a mini dish and a set-top box. It appears that the biggest difference is in terms of coverage. The way Freesat is broadcast means its coverage is total.
Freeview, on the other hand, although available to more than 98% of the UK, those with poor signals – such as those in the 15% of households that can only receive 15 core channels – will be better off with Freesat. Installing a satellite dish is the more expensive option, an average dish installation is around £99, as well as the cost of adding additional cables to extra rooms and the cost of the actual Freesat box.
For customers who already have a dish, such as former Sky customers, you will just need to buy a Freesat box, then simply switch the cables across. A standard Freesat set-top box costs around £50. Freeview requires a traditional TV aerial, and either a Freeview enabled TV, which is the norm these days, or a set-top box. Basic boxes can cost as little as £30
What channels are available on Freesat?
Why is a Freesat box more expensive? The number of channels available on Freeview is steadily increasing, with more than 70 now available and up to 12 in HD; On top of that, there are more than 20 radio stations. In comparison, Freesat offers around 200 TV and radio channels and customers who buy the Smart version of Freesat.
Furthermore, Freesat with Freetime will also get access to a full range of digital terrestrial catch-up TV services and on-demand content that might otherwise only be available through a pay TV provider. However, some channels such as Sky News, Dave and Gold, are available on Freeview but not on Freesat.
Freeview offers up to 12 HD TV channels: BBC channels One, Two, Three, Four*, News*, CBBC, CBeebies, ITV, ITV HD, Channel 4, Channel 4, 4+1*, Al-Jazeera, Channels marked with an asterisk are available to about 70% of UK homes.
Freesat, by contrast, offers all of the above apart from Al Jazeera.
Is Freesat Better Than Freeview?
For those willing to invest a little extra in their TV habit, both Freeview and Freesat offer set-top boxes with the ability to record programmes.
As with Youview and Sky, the difference is marked by a tiny change in the terminology. Boxes that can record are denoted by the addition of a “+” – so that’s Freeview+, Freesat+, Youview+, Sky+ and so on.
Both provide an eight-day TV guide, and they’ll feature some sort of series link option, allowing users to set up automatic recordings of a whole series with just a couple of button pushes. A decent Freeview+ HD recorder will cost from £130; Freesat + HD recorders start from £150.

Don’t have a chimney or a gable end, what is available?
Front or Back Wall
Aerial services can use the Loft
More frequently these days homeowners are opting to have their aerials installed into the loft. It is actually a good place to secure an aerial. If you can get a good signal in your loft then your aerial could last you as long as you need it as it will be protected from the elements which often cause them to fail over time. Often when there is no chimney or gable wall the loft can be the best position as it can offer almost as much height as a chimney or high wall.
Roof Penetrating Installation – Lead Flashing
Don’t have a chimney or a gable end, what is available? This isn’t very common, however, it is another possibility. A “pole through the roof”, or installing a mast of reasonable diameter, mounted through the roof and secured to the wooden beam in the loft. A tile is removed to allow the mast to enter the roof space, it is then replaced with a lead flashing to weatherproof the installation. Understandably this costs more than an average aerial installation.
It can provide an excellent place to install a TV aerial or satellite dish. It is very important to prevent water from penetrating the building, the top of the mast should have a bung inside to stop rainwater from running down flooding your loft.
Aerial Installation using a Tile & Slate Clamp
It is possible to mount your TV aerial to the roof without a chimney stack or pole through the roof. Using a Tile & Slate clamp that is secured to a roof tile, the weight of the tile will hold it in position. It’s not a fixing that is often used, but it can be successfully installed if there is no other option. Although only a small aerial can be mounted onto it.
Large Pole Concreted Into Ground
Not a particularly popular solution but you may be able to achieve good reception with a large pole concreted into the ground with a TV aerial mounted at the top. You would probably need a 16 to 20-foot pole to do this and with a decent diameter and wall thickness. As the mast itself would be very heavy and susceptible to high levels of wind loading, you would also need to secure the mast with guy wire in a few directions to prevent it blowing over in the wind.
Set Top Aerial Installations when you don’t have a chimney or gable end
If Don’t have a chimney or a gable end, what is available? On very rare occasions a set-top aerial can offer suitable reception for your TV and can often resolve all your problems. However, this will only work if you live within a very strong signal area and are on the top of a hill. If you have to use a set top aerial then these do work better higher up in the room or near a window, as the transmitted signal will penetrate easier than brickwork.
As you can see there are alternatives to having your aerial mounting onto a chimney stack, I hope we have given you something to think about and consider. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact us today 08000132341 ADI COMMUNICATIONS LTD.

How to Boost My Digital TV Signal
Digital TV is far superior in quality and clarity than analogue TV, but a weak signal can sometimes cause problems with reception. For example, a weak analogue signal would appear on the TV screen as a “snowy,” or grainy, picture, which may be annoying, but is still viewable. In contrast to this, a slightly weak digital signal would still be sharp and clear.
However, if the digital signal was too weak, it could cause the audio and video to cut in and out or disappear altogether. The best solution to either problem is to find a way to boost the incoming Aerial signal. Here are some tips for boosting a digital TV Aerial signal:
- Move the aerial to new location or height, if you’re using an indoor TV aerial. Moving it even a few inches (centimetres) can make a difference. It’s best to move it just a bit and then wait a few minutes to see if reception improves before moving it more.
- Re-aim the aerial, if you’re using an outdoor aerial. This may reduce or eliminate multipath problems. Note that outdoor aerial normally gets better reception than indoor aerial.
- Watch the signal strength meter on the digital-to-analogue converter box or television as you move or aim the aerial. Try to get the highest reading possible.
- Install a signal amplifier or booster between the aerial and receiver to increase the signal strength
Possible causes of TV Breaking Up:
Once you have properly installed the Aerial, changed the input on your TV to ‘Aerial’, and run a channel scan, you should be receiving at least some of your local channels. If this is not the case, the reason could be one of the following:
There is not a clear line of sight to the broadcast towers.
If hills, trees, buildings, or other geographic features are in between the broadcast towers and the Aerial, the signals might not be able to reach your Aerial. Elevating the Aerial, either by placing it in a higher location or using a taller mast, will increase the signal reception. The goal is to achieve the most unobstructed line of sight to the broadcast towers as possible.
Troubleshooting Aerial Reception Hill Illustration 1
The signal could be lost in the coaxial cable distribution.
Why Is My TV Breaking Up?
It is important to check regularly for corrosion, loose cable fittings, or if a cable has been compromised. If you are using a splitter, this could also weaken signal strength. Try disconnecting the splitter and running the cable directly into the TV/converter box and run a channel scan. If reception improves, a distribution amplifier is likely to be the solution.
The coaxial cable from the Aerial to the tuner could be too long.
When cable lengths reach over 100 feet, as much as 1/3 of the signal can be lost. If you require a long cable or are using a splitter, you may need a preamplifier.
You are more than 70 miles from the broadcast towers or beyond the range of the Aerial.
The curvature of the earth limits most Aerials to about 70 miles of range. Go to www.Aerialpoint.com and enter your address or zip code to ensure you are within the range of the broadcast towers in your area. If you are over 70 miles from the broadcast tower(s), reception is possible if the appropriate equipment is used and the right conditions are present.
Faulty Digital Tuner
It doesn’t happen often, but it is possible for the tuner to be faulty on a new TV, right out of the box. The ATSC tuner is separate from the HDMI or other inputs, so the tuner would not affect any other portion of the television. As a second step in troubleshooting, try installing the Aerial and cable to a secondary TV.
Problem: I’m receiving every channel except for one.
Possible causes Of Pixilation:
The station is broadcasting on a different frequency.
While the majority of TV stations transmit on the UHF frequency, there are some that use VHF. Although some UHF Aerials can pick up VHF signals, it is necessary to use an Aerial optimized to receive both UHF and VHF frequencies.
The transmitter for certain channels could be located at a lower elevation on the broadcast tower, or even behind other broadcast towers.
Lower elevation or obstruction by other towers can cause line-of-sight problems. UHF signals are dependent on line-of-sight for consistent reception. Change the location or elevation of the Aerial to see if the problem persists.
Problem: The picture isn’t clear or I see snow (fuzz).
Possible causes of Breaking Up On Your TV:
The TV might not have a built-in ATSC digital tuner.
Digital signals do NOT have snow! If you are seeing snow or fuzz on your TV, you are watching an analog broadcast. Typically, people with this problem don’t have an ATSC tuner built into their TV. If you have a TV that was purchased before 2007, this may apply to you. Consult the TV’s user manual or contact the manufacturer directly to find out if the TV has a built-in ATSC digital tuner. If it does not have one, an external receiver or converter box can be purchased, so that you can use your existing TV to receive HDTV broadcasts.
The auto program or channel scan procedure was not performed correctly.
If the TV does have an internal ATSC tuner, make sure the television’s input or source is set to “BROADCAST”, “TV” or “AIR”, not “CABLE”. Once you have verified this, go into your TV’s setup menu to scan for channels. Each television is different and different brands have varying procedures. If you are not receiving High Definition programming, consult the TV’s manual or contact the manufacturer to make sure these steps are followed correctly.
Problem: I live within 2 miles of the broadcast tower, but the signal is breaking up.
Possible Causes Of Why My TV Does Not Work:
Your TV may be receiving interfering signals.
A larger/stronger Aerial will not necessarily solve this problem. Consider moving the Aerial, making sure it is not placed near metal objects or other Aerials. If this is not successful, your signal may be too strong and may require the use of an attenuator.
